About Shiatsu

In the Eastern medical model, our bodies are composed of matter and energy.

The energy, or motive force is called “chi” (or Qi, Ki) and circulates throughout our whole body along pathways.  When this flow is distorted, illness and discomfort result.  Treatment with Acupuncture and Shiatsu may normalize the Chi flow to improve circulation, lessen pain, and improve functioning and immunity.

Shiatsu means “finger pressure”.  Points on the body are given pressure to stimulate movement and rebalance stuck energies.  The therapist uses vertical, comfortable, sustained pressure with her fingers, thumbs, palms, and elbows to points on your body.  Patients wear loose, comfortable clothing and are supported on a treatment table or gravity chair (for those having mobility problems) with pillows and bolsters as necessary.  Passive stretching is used to limber joints.  Shiatsu is diagnosis and treatment at the same time; the therapist is always noting the condition beneath the skin surface, which is why treatment is done through clothing.

Adjunct therapies such as cupping, guasha, heat packs etc. may also be used.  Please see the appropriate tab for further information on these modalities.
